Parrish faces re-election battle after McCallion supporter enters race

Carolyn Parrish is facing a battle for re-election after a second contender entered the race this week: former Mississauga councillor Ron Starr, who failed to win the Ward 6 seat four years ago.  Observers say Mr. Starr, a long-time friend and supporter of Mayor Hazel McCallion, may be positioning himself as the anti-Parrish candidate, a charge he denies.  "She's got certain things to offer and I've got certain things to offer," Mr. Starr said of his opponent.
Yet with friction between Ms. Parrish, pictured, and Ms. McCallion in the run-up to the city's judicial inquiry -- which some residents perceive as an attack on their long-serving Mayor-- Mr. Starr is likely to run on a pro-McCallion platform, while appealing to the "anyone-but-Carolyn-Parrish" sentiment, noted Tom Urbaniak, an academic who has written extensively on the city.
