Hurricane Hazel to run for Mayor again

Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion announced today while fishing
she will run for a 12th term in office next year. In 2006, she took 92% of the votes.

Hazel McCallion has won Mississauga's 2010 mayoral race...basically.

Today, the iconic 88-year-old leader of Canada's sixth largest city told the Sun's Joe Warmington she intends to run again for Mayor in the upcoming 2010 municipal election.

McCallion has never been beat, and in her 2006 election win — her 11th — she took 92% of the votes.

"Yes. I am going to be offering my services to the City of Mississauga," she said, while fishing on Lake Ontario in the Great Ontario Salmon Derby.

"People keep asking me. I will run again if my health is (good).

"If I feel I am not able to do it, I won't run. I feel I want to go out on a high level," she added.

McCallion said her main objective in the next term would be to deal with Mississauga's infrastructure needs.

Councillor Carolyn Parish, who has had her eye on the city's top job, told the Sun she will not run against McCallion.

"I would lose," laughed the ward 6 Councillor and former MP. "And I have to much respect for her to run against her."

She added she would like to run for Mayor one day.

"I am patient," she said.

Happened to surf by and simply have to respond.

You wrote:

And NEITHER ARE MUNICIPAL "STAFF*!

In the case of Peel, it’s Regional Mayors and Councillors who oversee Police, nursing homes and social services. School trustees monitor Teachers. (Legal Aid lawyers… not sure.)

So you’re saying that if citizens are concerned about an abusive teacher or cop, or suspicious deaths in a nursing home --THEY WAIT TIL THE NEXT ELECTION?!

To Mississaugawatch:

I find your logic flawed since Police, Teachers, Lawyers are not re-hired/re-elected every 4 years!

I also wonder how much of your Freedom of Information documents is costing taxpayers. Is there a public complaint process for citizens to complain about citizens wasting tax dollars?

carole davis     August 13th 2009, 4:47am

Now this is a real mayor. Any city in this country would be lucky to have Hazel as their leader. Mississauga is so lucky. I always enjoy reading about her and love the way she stands up for her constituents.

Um. You do know that Mississaugans have no legitimate choice, right? That no politician of any substance has the GUTS to run against her, right?

Or there shouldn't be a complaints procedure against lawyers, right?

Or against police, right?

Or against doctors, right?

Or against nursing homes, right?

So you're good with a municipal government having only an election every four years to assess their employees' actions or fail-to-actions, right?

Boy RUN FOR OFFICE on that noise! You'll get a LOT of muniicipal employees supporting you friend!

You stated the City of Mississauga never had a public complaints process. Isn't an election a public complaint process where if the public didn't like something they could get rid of those in power. I think the last thing we need is more red tape at City Hall or more people being paid on the taxpayer dollars to keep track of such a system.

PD     August 12th 2009, 9:18pm

1959, 1976....I'll concede that maybe your reference to Castro can be misconstrued. Regardless, I've just spent the past hour checking out your website. I'll make no comment about the site here in this forum but I invite others to check it out and make their own opinions.

I do however find in very interesting. Interesting in the fact that I can't find in your site your specific beef with Mississauga Corporate Security. You probably have your own reasons for not disclosing such. Maybe if you did, you'd find you'd have a much more sympathetic audience ( and I include myself in that).

For the record, I a NOT a Mississaugan.

The question is - The longest serving leader elected by the people in a fair and democratic way. How many leaders can say that.

Castro does not count.

Andrew Turner August 12th 2009, 9:13pm

Dear MississaugaWatch

Thanks for taking up 20 minutes of my life listening to you ramble away in front of council with no particular direction. I can only assume that one of your children must have been charged with trespassing as you seem to have an unhealthy fixation with it. The councilor who you thank for his help was politely asking you WTF you wanted, which seems like a fair question. He wasn't trying to help you, he was giving you the "hook." To quote Joey Logano, "You can't fix stupid, it's for life."

Tim August 12th 2009, 9:01pm

I don't think she is said to outlast Castro unless she started at the same time as him or before. Otherwise, she already has outlasted him since he is no longer in power.
A stupid comment either way you interpret it.

MISSISSAUGAWATCH.CA     August 12th 2009, 8:57pm

HEY PD! You wrote, "Hey MISSISSSAUGAWATCH..............check your facts. Castro came to power in 1959."

Here's what I said "Fact: Should Mississaugans vote in Hazel McCallion one more time, she'll have outlasted Fidel Castro as President of Cuba (1976 to Feb 2008)." "PRESIDENT"! SO CHECK YOUR READING SKILLS!

You wrote: "Mississauga wouldn't be anywhwere near the city it is today without Mayor McCallion. Just watch her in action” I not only watch Council in action, I'm researching their Reign of Barrier through Freedom of Information.

Like so many Mississaugans you parrot what the Media's fed you! McCallion AND Councillors don't run Mississauga. Staff do! You could replace those 12 politicians with SOCK PUPPETS!

WWW.MISSISSAUGAWATCH.CA August 12th 2009, 8:39pm

To The Ram again.

And McCallion and Councillors would never tell you that in the City of Mississauga's entire histiory it never had a public complaints system

www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYR4Y6rC6Sk

or ever kept track of even informal complaints:

www.flickr.com/photos/43172810@N00/1331198173/sizes/l/

And when they finally did get around to a formal policy, they (zero surprised) allowed Staff to investigate themselves!

Mayor and Councillor rubber-stamp policies and even by-laws in seconds!

Mississauga Council avoided The Ontario Ombudsman in 16 seconds!

www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zmzHTtKpjE

and rubber-stamped a Security ban/arrest report in a record 12 seconds.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rtv3QXejoKA

Likely the same in most municipalities

PD     August 12th 2009, 8:18pm

Hey MISSISSSAUGAWATCH..............check your facts. Castro came to power in 1959
Mississauga wouldn't be anywhwere near the city it is today without Mayor McCallion. Just watch her in action in Council Chambers....no bull, no pussy-footing about. She does what she was elected to do, make decisions and lead...whether or not it is popular or not. A true politician without "politics" to cloud her actions.

Tim     August 12th 2009, 6:23pm

Are you going to have a day off if she dies in office?

MISSISSAUGAWATCH     August 12th 2009, 6:16pm

Judging from the pro-Incumbent messages left here we're left to conclude only one of two things. Either they don't know what Freedom of Information documents have confirmed about how Mississauga is REALLY RUN --Or these people APPROVE! Fact: Should Mississaugans vote in Hazel McCallion one more time, she'll have outlasted Fidel Castro as President of Cuba (1976 to Feb 2008). Isn't there ANYONE wonderin' about how any Mayor in the free world can escape public scrutiny and stay in power that long? Or compelled to investigate?...

MISSISSAUGAWATCH     August 12th 2009, 6:06pm

The Sun writes, “Today, the iconic 88-year-old leader of Canada's sixth largest city told the Sun's Joe Warmington she intends to run again for Mayor in the upcoming 2010 municipal election.” Expect City Staff, municipal employees of other cities residing in Mississauga, the Mississauga Board of Trade, especially Rogers Cable 10 TV, Mississauga Economic Development Office, every sycophant who ever benefited from the City's Corporate Grants to churn up the ol' Re-Election campaign so that Hazel McCallion can claim once again that she doesn't have to campaign. And Media to perpetuate the Myth of Mississauga. And of course for The Incumbent Machine to generate “VOTE FOR HAZEL”! comments and Letters to the Editor in newspapers...

The Ram     August 12th 2009, 5:57pm

G S     August 12th 2009, 4:14pm

Sad to say, but Mississauga is just as bad as Brampton. Overbuilt, poorly planned and over taxed. I used to live there but luckily I got out, as did most of my friends. Hazel might be a fireball and a charismatic person but the city need someone who will manage the city better.

mario     August 12th 2009, 4:14pm

Got so wordy talking to TIm, forgot to mention.
WAY TO GO HAZEL!!!!!......Keep up the great work. I have followed your career for awhile now
and no doubt you are the best Mayor of any City in Canada. It is so refreshing to hear and see
the results of a Mayor who Truly believes in her City and ALL the people in it no matter of culture
and political stripe. Placing The City's (as a whole) interest always comes first and that is what I admire about her. Toronto's mindless citizens would never vote for someone with vision like
Mayor McCallion. ITS POLITICS and UNION RULES IN TORONTO. How very SAD.

Hope your Health stays strong Hazel, Good luck to you.

Sick and Tired     August 12th 2009, 4:05pm

Mississaug conservative:

It was worth a shot. Though I have lived in Toronto all my life, I have followed the political career of the Hurricane. Saying she is an amazing lady and unlike any other political official is an understatement. If we can't have her, can we at least borrow her for a few weeks. I think that's all it would take her to clean up our corrupt city hall. Actually on second thought, it wouldnt work. Toronto has become a haven for ignorant liberal and ndp'ers who would never vote her in anyway because they are to stupid to think for themselves and are easily brainwashed by the National Enquirer of Toronto newspapers (the star)

BWS     August 12th 2009, 4:05pm

Toronto.....eat your heart out.

Hazel is the best!!! May she live to be 120....

IT GOES TO SHOW YOU THAT A PERSON WITH GUTS AND COMMON SENSE TRUMPS A WELL COIFFED FAILURE LIKE MILLER.

Mississauga Conservative     August 12th 2009, 4:04pm

To Dean,

That's great news !

I detest that woman ever since she opened her big fat mouth about our American neighbours and embarrassed this country.

I hope she is NEVER mayor. At least she is smart enough to know she'd get her butt kicked big time if she ran against Hazel.

mario     August 12th 2009, 4:01pm

To: TIM

It is not about higher Taxes, yes they are slightly higher in Miisissauga (and Brampton and
Caledon where I am). It's about HOW YOU SPEND THE TAX DOLLARS YOU IDIOT. What has
Toronto recieved since Miller and his crooks came into power.....I'm waiting......NOTHING.
Tell me ONE improvement in Toronto paid By Tax dollars.......NOTHING. All I hear is about
higher tax increases, New Taxes and New User Fees, Council on lavish trips, Union contract
increases etc. Where is this money going TIM?
Please explain it to me. At least in Mississauga you can see the improvements, hear about them.
People will always be more than happy to pay their share of Taxes as long as we see the
benefits and the transparency. Just does not happen in Toronto.

TIm     August 12th 2009, 4:01pm

Hey lee, my garbage was picked up by a private company since I live in a condo. And the strike has been over for a while.
And Dean, if you had the bums and creeps we get from Mississauga coming here to smoke their crack, you'd see what we are up against.

Dean     August 12th 2009, 3:59pm

Mississauga Conservative Carolyn Parish will not run against Hazel she does want the job but only after Hazel gives it up. She says she would lose and has too much respect to run against Hazel so relax.

Jon     August 12th 2009, 3:59pm

I love you Hazel!

Dean     August 12th 2009, 3:52pm

Yes the property taxes are higher in Mississauga but they spend the money better they do not throw it at unions and I do not recall the counsell of Mississauga giving themselfs a 25% pay raise like Miller did. They don't use their office budgets of food, booze, and other stuff its used for their ridings. Toronto could learn from Mississauga there is a good reason she has been mayor so long she knows how to run a city. She does not have the high rise condo's Toronto has so she has less revenue to work from but she does not charge a vehicle registration tax.

John "Buck" Anger     August 12th 2009, 3:51pm

Congratulations Hazel we live in the Niagara area and wish we had one member of our local government that was as astute as you.

Rocky     August 12th 2009, 3:39pm

Congratulation Hazel. Can you run for Toronto please? Toronto is on his knees.Devil Miller and his lapdogs have ruined this city and the residents.

Hey Tim, you torontonian enjoying the smell of garbage?

Tim     August 12th 2009, 3:34pm

What are the property taxes like there? I hear they are a lot higher than Toronto.
Why do people love her so much if the property taxes are so high?
It's all propaganda.

Erik     August 12th 2009, 3:31pm

I believe unlike another poster on here, that she should be allowed to run so long as she is healthy enough to do so. The fact that she's not been beaten tells me that a) she does her job and truly cares for the city and it's people (are you LISTENING Miller?) and b) it is her passion and she does an EXCELLENT job. If she loves the job, and the people are happy, why in God's name would you force her to retire? Retirement is a concept that is worshiped by those that hate their jobs.

Tim     August 12th 2009, 3:31pm

Don't forget what happened to Melvin. Stuck around one election too many and is now remembered as a laughing stock.

Mississauga Conservative     August 12th 2009, 3:28pm

Enough is enough. Force her into retirement. What about retirement rules? Are there none?

Marty     August 12th 2009, 3:15pm
