A Peel Regional Police officer has been charged after a driver crashed his car and fled the scene of the accident, leaving his injured passenger behind in the vehicle.
Halton Regional Police allege the officer, a five-year member of the Peel force who works out of 12 Division in Mississauga, was off-duty when the crash occurred yesterday just after 2:30 a.m.
Halton Police say they were called to investigate a crash that saw a black 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier roll over while travelling on Derry Rd., just west of Sixth Line in Milton.
Officers arrived and found an injured man in the passenger seat of the car. He had suffered a concussion and other injuries.
It was quickly determined that the driver of the car had fled the scene, according to Halton Sgt. Peter Payne.
Investigation at the scene indicates that the car was travelling east on Derry Rd. when it turned just west of Sixth Line. The car skidded and left the roadway, rolling into the north ditch. The car rolled several times before coming to rest almost 60 metres from where it left the road, Payne said.
The injured man was rushed to Milton District Hospital for treatment of a concussion and minor injuries.
Halton Police continued to investigate the crash and attempted throughout the night to make contact with the registered owner of the car. Shortly after midnight, while police were at the hospital with the passenger, the car's registered owner arrived, asking to be treated for minor injuries, Payne said.
Charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident is 25-year-old Georgetown resident Justin Vandenbrink of Georgetown.
Vandenbrink has been suspended with pay and will face an investigation under the Police Services Act, in addition to the criminal charge, according to Peel Cst. JP Valade. Home Page - Main Table of Contents - Back up a page - Back to Top [COMMENTS BY DON B. - ] |
