Mississauga's best election battle: Woloshyn

An ugly defeat in 2006 hasn't dissuaded Ron Starr
from taking another run at Carolyn Parrish

Next to the great Mississauga train derailment, the most closely observed event in the citys history will be the battle for Ward 6 in the upcoming municipal election.

In one corner the incumbent, Carolyn Parrish.  In the other corner, back for another shot, the challenger, Ron Starr.

Starr, a councillor in the 80s lost last time by 1,400 votes out of a total of 11,000.  There were two other candidates both of whom are not running this time.

Each called to offer their support for my campaign, said Starr.

The 2006 campaign culminated in some ugly tactics.  In December of 1999, Starr, who ran a charitable kids camp, was accused of utilizing the camp for his own uses with a value in excess of $5,000. In April 2001 the court stated there were no wrongdoings.

We received an apology from the courts. It never got to trial, added Starr.

But the night before the 2006 vote, a two-page photocopied flyer was circulated in the riding outlining the charges against Starr.

Misinformation

It was misinformation which didnt include information about what the courts found, Starr said.

Hes not pointing fingers but admits it was too late to counter, and probably cost him the election.

Our polling indicated we were winning until the missile landed, he laughs.

So why, when you have a very successful business, would you want to go through perhaps another loathsome campaign?

Because I want to bring civility back to council, he said.  Its time to stop playing politics and get down to the business of running a city.

Although at first blush this looks like just another battle for a council seat, the reality is it is about unseating Carolyn Parrish, the councillor many believe spearheaded the judicial inquiry which involves Mayor Hazel McCallion and a potential conflict of interest.  It is also a common held belief Parrish has formed a coalition with six other councillors to defeat motions put forward by McCallion.

Several months ago I wrote about a movement to have the mayor endorse key candidates in order to bring back a sense of balance to council.  Although that has yet to happen, an endorsement from her worship would greatly improve Starrs chances.

Having said that, its clear Parrishs recent antics such as tearing down a poster for a rally in support of Hazel will not be overlooked during the campaign.

Has Starr asked for Hazels support?

No, I havent. It would be nice, but thats not what this election is all about, he said.

What this is about, insists Starr, is bringing back the Mississauga of old.

I want Mississauga back on the map as a respected city.  Weve lost a lot of our lustre, he said.

Whether or not defeating Parrish accomplishes that desire or even brings it back to that path is questionable, but Starr is adamant he will follow Hazels lead in staying in touch with citizens.

She listens to people, and I will do that.  As my grandfather Theo used to say, The good Lord made your ears and mouth in a certain proportion; use them that way, he laughs.

Either way, come debate time, the sky over Mississauga should light up just like it did during the train derailment.

The only difference is nobody was seriously injured then.  Im not so sure about this time.

Well well Bisk...
why don't you run ?? sounds like you and Carol are of the same ilk or is that bilk ?

Bisk     April 23rd 2010, 4:43pm

well its too bad there is not a better option than these two. One thing I do know is, I wouldn't trust Starr as far as I can throw him.

auggie T     April 16th 2010, 12:11pm

Did you hear the latest poll on voting patterns in Hazeltown.
680 Radio has been announcing it all day ... 88% for Hazel 6% for PARRISH
AWWWW Right .. love polls
Go to another website someone just sent me .. www.stopcarolynparrish.com sounds like the sleepy mississaugans are waking up

To Ram, Hi there.

You wrote: "I have been a Die-Hard Hazel Fan, forever. However, over the Last 4 Weeks..."

Gosh, Ram, I was a Die-Hard Hazel Fan --voted for her since 1978! Until 2006, then I laid down a protest vote. This round I struck a match to 200-bucks, filed for Mayor and my protest vote if for me!

You wrote: "Is it possible that the Person who Refused your Video prefers Oral Intercourse to Voyeurism? "

I'm not entirely sure what you're referring to but I asked permission to videotape because I don't trust the local what-passes-for-Media. The Judicial Inquiry was 100% reasonable in not wanting "roving cameras" that could pick up private lawyer-client stuff and "unguarded moments".

I prefer access to the media feed.

The Ram     April 13th 2010, 2:41pm

I have been a Die-Hard Hazel Fan, forever. However, over the Last 4 Weeks, I have heard Quite a Few Disturbing Stories, from people; many of Whom were Hazel Fans, themselves, and Whom I know for a Fact Do Not have an Axe to Grind w/he.
Having said that, what I Do Know is that there is a Judicial Inquiry; the Outcome, of which, will determine the Truth (hopefully); unless there are Attempts to Suppress Evidence and I am willing to wait.
To Mississauga Watch: Is it possible that the Person who Refused your Video prefers Oral Intercourse to Voyeurism?
To Watcher: U mentioned that Carolyn Parrish Abused you and Refused to Accept Documents which would Compromise Madam Mayor? Wonder what's her Angle? CP isn't known for Political Philanthropy.

MISSISSAUGAWATCH     April 11th 2010, 8:34am

Going to put this in the record over here.

Yesterday I received word that I won't be allowed to show a specially-prepared video for tomorrow's Judicial Inquiry hearing on citizen-journalism. What was unique about the video was that it showed Mayor McCallion bemoan in two Audit Committees (actually there were more, just time prevented use of more) Staff's "disregard for policy". The video had City Staff making claims --and then cutting to video-reality.

The video would've stood in stark contrast to what the "accredited media" "report" on McCallion and company.

Not allowed to show it. Here's the email received yesterday. Quote: "Sorry but we are not setting up any equipment for this hearing. It is an oral presentation to the judge."

Watcher     April 10th 2010, 11:30pm

In the past I was trying to give Council Government documents for the Inquiry that show a clear link between Peter McCallion and his mother, while she was sitting as Mayor in a business deal. A transaction involving the company Hazel McCallion was using to act as a developer in Mississauga and that she had been hiding the details of. a letter from a City Councillor to a developer regarding Peter and getting rezoneing that staff were opposed to.

Councillor Parrish interrupted me, abused me, publicly and would not take the documents.
Mississauga Inquiry has the outcome has already been decided.

Bravo     April 10th 2010, 10:43pm

Hilarious. That makes being a Rogers customer that much more rewarding.
Great information Mwatch.Too absurd.
Thanks.

MISSISSAUGAWATCH     April 10th 2010, 9:40pm

Hey there Bravo,

Wasn't misconstrued, and sorry if my comments made it appear that way.

I'm in complete agreement --and I like your additional comment "That's what I was getting at,the media rushes to her defence regardless of what it is,she appears to do no wrong" even better.

I'd only like to add, you're too kind calling these stenographer-sycophants as "media"

Oh and get this. Rogers made a call out that they were making a documentary and would people like to contribute. Wrote several times and even offered video. Never heard back from Todd Collisson Special Projects Producer.

That's the "quality" of the "media" we have in MYTHissauga.

Of course I suspect this is true of most municipalities --little more than Company Towns.

Bravo     April 10th 2010, 9:25pm

That's what I was getting at,the media rushes to her defence regardless of what it is,she appears to do no wrong. Not sure how that was misconstrued.

MISSISSAUGAWATCH     April 10th 2010, 8:34pm

Bravo writes, "Hazels had a free pass for years, and don't dare call her on anything for fear of a knee-jerk reaction from the media "

So how BAD is "media" in MYTHissauga?

Look what ROGERS Cable 10 plans on showing when the Mississauga Judicial Inquiry is on!

"Hazel About the show

The story of how Hazel Journeaux, a little farm girl from Port Daniel, Quebec became the Mayor of Mississauga is a fascinating one. In this 6-part documentary, we follow Hazel’s journey from her humble beginnings to the woman she is today – a woman recognized and rewarded on the world stage...

Broadcast Dates & Times: Sunday, April 18 through to Friday, May 28

Is it any wonder that McCallion doesn't have to campaign?

Get this. I offered my videos...

Bravo     April 10th 2010, 7:34pm

Hazels had a free pass for years, and don't dare call her on anything for fear of a knee-jerk reaction from the media or pablum writers such as this example.
That being said, this other wing nut is the type that no matter what, she pops up somewhere,It's like playing Whack-A-Mole.

Bob     April 10th 2010, 4:23pm

I cannot believe that the voters in Ward 6 could be so brain-dead that they would give this foul mouthed, classless bitch another opportunity to embarass Mississauga. She is worse than the Guergis bitch that Harper finally got rid of. There may not be enough good women in politics but one or two like Parrish are too much. The same could be said about many men in politics but that's another story.

MISSISSAUGAWATCH     April 10th 2010, 1:09pm

Tom Urbaniak’s book, Her Worship: Hazel McCallion and the Development of Mississauga (Paperback). It sure explains what I’ve been observing.

Especially the sociopathic shrek that Mississauga Council has for external scrutiny. Like roaches scatter upon threat of a light switch, like vampires as Dawn doth approach.

Quote:

“A no-nonsense style of leadership had the effect of preserving discipline in the bureaucracy —there were no more high profile leaks or resignations as there had been during the Dobkin mayoralty. But there were not many independent oversight mechanisms. There was therefore not the embarrassment that an auditor general or an ombudsman can bring."

MISSISSAUGAWATCH     April 10th 2010, 1:03pm

Mississauga "of old."

Tom Urbaniak, Her Worship: Hazel McCallion and the Development of Mississauga.

"When some anonymous letters surfaced suggesting that Mississauga Transit managers and workers had been receiving gas, car washes, and repairs for their private vehicles with the bills being charged to Mississauga Transit, Peel Regional Police concluded not only that the accusations were groundless (although they acknowledged that some members of managements had practised the ‘informal policy’ of putting gas in their vehicles at public expense instead of submitting expense claims for mileage used to perform city business), but that they would try to find the anonymous letter writer(s) to lay charges of mischief.”

MISSISSAUGAWATCH     April 10th 2010, 12:03pm

The REAL Mississauga (that Woloshyn) is covering up. With video of a behind-the-scenes look at the City of Mississauga's Audit Committee and how often Hazel McCallion expresses frustration in Staff's "disregard for policy".

The video also shows victims (sub-contractors) directly affected by Staff's non-compliance to policy --AND elected officials hiding facts from him as to what they knew.

MISSISSAUGA JUDICIAL INQUIRY submission: Politricks, Lies and Videotape

Even better, for people who really want to know what's what, read Tom Urbaniak’s book, Her Worship: Hazel McCallion and the Development of Mississauga (Paperback).

For you others, feel free to continue with Woloshyn.

The Crusher     April 10th 2010, 11:28am

Hey Armani and democracy versus police state, I am a bit confused. By drunk, big fat, political whore are you guys referring to Parrish or Woloshyn? I don't think there is a bar stool in Streetsville that doesn't have permanent imprint or Woloshyn's butt cheeks. Woloshyn is using his column to whore himself for his political friends. So you can see why I am a bit confused.
I believe Woloshyn's political whoring days will be over once the inquiry starts. Hopefully he will but his drink down and will be man enough to use his column to admit the errors of his ways, but I doubt it.

Jeff     April 10th 2010, 11:26am

gee, the guy running against ms Parrish sure mis-read her and it cost him the election. Well buddy that says allot about you does it not? Everyone knows Carolyn is a power hungry bitch who has been playing dirty politics for years. She is as cunning as she is boorish.
These types of people get ahead by making the balls and letting others throw them.Carolyn does not hide what she is. She's very adept at the political game.
Her flaw is her potty mouth and boorish behaviour, she just can't seem to keep it in check. Never has and never will.Sure she is hiding in the reeds waiting tp pounce on any Hazel mis-cue. She is biding her time and will continue to stir false shit until the electorate starts to doubt. Then knife hazel in her back.

Terra Cotta     April 10th 2010, 10:45am

It's well known in Missed News country that if word gets out that you're on Council there & want to take a run @ the mayor's chair then friend's of the mayor's chair will take you out before you get a chance as it's much harder ( read impossible ) to have reasonable chance of getting the mayor's chair, just ask Don Barber & the Mississauga Muse ...

sayed     April 10th 2010, 10:28am

Hey CANADIAN..
Check out your facts... It has already been reported ( but you have to be able to read ) that the Woloshyn who is Petre McCallion's lawyer has no lineage to Ted.. that was another Parrish enquiry.
And Kudos to you , Ted , for writng your column !! Freedom of speech is something we still enjoy. And Ted's column is the only reason I buy the Saturday Sun. ...Hey CDN> I guess he must of stepped on your toes or on your "Favourite" Councilors toes. And it is not about control . How do you control narscissim and a I love me attitude? Get rid of her.

B. Burton     April 10th 2010, 10:17am

Re post from Canadian exactly which ward are you trying to get elected in, could this be you Carolyn or one of your other brain dead lackies on council.

Hey, where is the Jaffer scandal in the Sun??? This is the number one story in Canada and the Sun buries it in the news with a scumbag little story about how wonderful Fat Steve was for dealing with this growing scandal.

This is as good a proof as ever that the Sun is nothing but a Tory rag. You'd think there was no minster who resigned in disgrace yesterday.

It's days like this that demonstrate why the Sun has ZERO CREDIBILITY

MAYOR HAZEL MCCALLION CAN'T STOMACH PARRISH. WOLOSHYN IS THE MAYOR'S SOMETIMES MASTER OF CEREMONIES. TODAY HE'S PEDDLING HER RANT. THE TIGHT GROUP OF CONTROL FREAKS IN MISSISSAUGA DON'T LIKE PARRISH CAUSE THEY CAN'T CONTROL HER. SHE'S NOT FOR SALE............................. PS and WILLIAM WOLOSHYN IS PETER MCCALLION'S LAWYER IN THE MATTERS BEFORE THE JUDICIAL ENQUIRY................. SO SUCK IT UP. THE USE OF THIS PAPER TO PROMOTE STARR BY WOLOSHYN IS DISGRACEFUL.

melissa     April 10th 2010, 8:25am

thank you Mr Starr for running against the ward 6 councilor. You got our Ward 6 support and I will go up and down the street for you
I and our family of 4 voted for HER after we received the nasty filth in the middle of the night.
Biggest mistake I have ever made in voting for a candidate because I always thought if you got political information at the door , it was supposed to be factual. How naive when you have a politician like Parrrish.
She should resign now. She has embarrased the city of Mississauga, the Mayor and the citizens of Mississauga.. We voters will not make the same mistake again. That is a promise.
Please // run for Mayor if you really want the job // one on one with Hazel

Armani     April 10th 2010, 3:39am

Thanks Ted for Keeping that Fat disgusting Political Whore in the Back of our Minds as the thought of Her or any one like her( ME ME ME ME ME) running for Office & yet again possibly being Relected DSIGUSTS ME the only time I was ever mildly Joyous was when she Defeated that Useless Waste of Skin Steve Mahoney another piece of Work now Heading another Bureaucracy WCB Shes Playing the Waiting Game Honestly thinking that us Saps will Allow her to Sit in Hazels Seat Thats another Reason that DOUCHEBAG Mahoney Left Miss Politics cause he New he couldn't Defeat Hazel as many Belived that he too aspired to be Mayor But U probably know a lot of this Crap anyhow as a fellow Native Ted Lest we forget now Lets put FAT ASS back on her Sofa FOR GOOD !!

democracy vs police state     April 10th 2010, 1:27am

Mississauga is a beautiful city that would be wise to dump the kielbasa queen drunk in ward 6.she's confusing that prison near square one as her personal little treasure trove to syphon money.

R. Burton     April 10th 2010, 12:10am

Parrish, even when she was in council 20 years ago, was continuously demonstrating that she was in politics only for herself. This trait has continued right on through Ottawa and still prevails right back where it all began. She's Mississauga's version of Alphonse Gagliano and David Dingwall.
Turf her from council promptly and save yourselves.

Bruce     April 9th 2010, 11:33pm

Nobody will run and win against McCallion, unfortunately. The lady is way past her best before date and like the old race car driver, should retire while on top.
Parrish, I think, likes the wine a little too much and does some loopy things but I believe her heart is in the rihgt place.
I wouldn't vote for McCallion but I'd give Parrish another kick at the can.

grenadier     April 9th 2010, 10:07pm

Slappy: Your personal comments about Hazel are despicable.
I don't know what you will look like at her age, but you can't stand in her shadow!
I don't live in Mississauga, but I do know that Hazel is a respectable woman.
As for Parish: At least you are right about her. She deserves to be turfed out, never to be heard from again.

George from Brampton     April 9th 2010, 8:58pm

Lets hope the people of this ward have seen enough of Parish's action and her utter distaste for Hazel and not vote for her. Parrish was a disgrace when with the Liberals in Parliament and her antics of stomping on dolls etc. She has shown she has not changed her ways in her actions against Hazel. You notice the Parirsh does not have the guts to run against Hazel because she knows she will loose big time. Parrishi is just biding her time and hopes Hazel steps down then she will make her play. Simply put PARRISH DOES NOT HAVE THE GUTS TO GO ONE ON ONE WITH HAZEL, but then thats what chickens are noted for. The people of Mississauga deserve better.

slappy     April 9th 2010, 8:13pm

we can only hope that bull dyke pig parrish gets the boot. as much as i would like to see that wrinkled old fossil hazel gone, parrish is much worse and just as corrupt as hazel. its one thing to keep getting elected based soley one who you happen to be, but parrish is a useless tit who has to go.
