Hurricane Hazel So, former broadcaster and retired comedian Ted Woloshyn has morphed into political pundit. His approach is rather unique -- no long hours reading boring reports or sitting through council meetings. Modelling himself after the movie characters of the '50s, he keeps it simple. Ted's gas-guzzling sedan cruises around Streetsville, coming to rest at a few regular haunts, where he perches on a comfortable stool and soaks up the local gossip. He also chats regularly with his good friend Hazel McCallion, mulling over the new-fangled democracy at City Hall. Debate is open, votes are unpredictable and Her Worship is "unable to win key votes" she complains to Ted. The two buddies have been plotting to regain absolute power -- recruiting a "Hazel Team" for the next election, whose only qualifications will be that they back the mayor. No platform, no vision for our city -- only blind, unquestioning loyalty. Those who tried to fill the chambers last week -- realtors who regularly do business with the city, developers who have assembled vast brown-box neighbourhoods, and large investment groups -- would breathe a sigh of relief. No more bothersome questions. No more embarrassing moments. No more "tornadoes of trouble" for Ted to write about. Why did seven reasonable councillors take leave of their senses and risk the wrath of McCallion's adoring public to call for a judicial review? Surely, even the simple recognize there's no up-side to spending $2 million on a fishing expedition, or to hurrying an icon into retirement! Electoral disaster is sure to follow unless there are serious outcomes. What prompted council's request? Is it important that the mayor failed to declare her fourth conflict of interest on May 21, 2008? Not really. Council is not even pursuing that issue. It is very important to find out who altered the official recorded minutes of that meeting. It's also significant that meetings were held in a Toronto hotel with the mayor, developers of a multi-million dollar conference/hotel complex, Mississauga city staff who could recommend the necessary zoning changes, lawyers for landowner OMERS and of course, the mayor's son -- who would make a fortune brokering the project. It's also important to get to the bottom of a deal between the city and OMERS over our $500-million utility, Enersource. The mysteriously altered agreement gave 100% veto power over all major decisions to the 10% partner -- all without council's knowledge or consent. After spending hundreds of thousands of dollars, the city remains unable to get to the bottom of the mystery. Good old Ted suggests council should have hired an integrity commissioner, someone to set guidelines for future decisions but unable to unravel the murky past. Hired by council, paid by Council, and fired the first time there's a disagreement with council. What kind of simplistic solution is that? One clear-thinking constituent wrote: "I want my mayor and councillors to be accountable for their decisions and actions. If a judicial inquiry is required to ensure this, then that is just one of the costs of living in a democracy." Council voted to request a judicial review so we could put the issues into the capable hands of a skilled, unbiased judge who will competently sort out a vast array of troubling questions and offer sound direction for the future. Surely Ted can take some comfort in that! -- Parrish is the councillor for Mississauga Ward 6

To talentscout; Take the time to find out what is going on; CP created a stir that cost us close to $50,000 in lawyer fees to find out that there was no conflict to declare; None of the papers clearly report that... The voters will decide the future of Mississauga not Parrish or her gang of 7. THe "value" of Hazel to Mississauga has been priceless. years of contributing to mississauga, day in and day out. No wonder no one campaigns against Hazel she campaigns with her actions, at the Hospitals, at the Community events, driving business to Mississauga and getting us on the map. Parrish and her gang of 7. What value do they bring? Oh! she fund raised for fireworks. I think the money could be better spend at the food banks or at the hospitals. But then again this fits with Parrish - big bang theme of politics, make a long of noise and stink. Maybe some people get impressed. The Voters and the Businesses understand in Mississauga. Mississauga is the perfect example of how NOT to build a city. Hazel McCallion was the Queen of Sprawl as for decades she did the bidding of local developers who have paved over every last empty space in Mississauga. Hazel was so busy working for developers she didn't bother to make sure people moving into these endless subdivisions had little things like schools, arenas, libraries and public transportation. Now the Queen of Sprawl says she regrets the mess she made of her city but it's too late. People in Mississauga spend their days stuck in gridlock and need to drive long distances for many things. It is time for Hazel to pack up her bags and get the hell out of the Mayor's office. xxx Report Comment

Hazel mccallion has been a fraud for 20 years financing the city coffers through fees from uncontrolled development. Well the hens are coming home to roost...8% tax increase last year and probably many many more large increases coming in the future. Never liked Hazel, always thought she was getting a free ride with the media, I guess it's cute that she's 90 and still ticking who cares if she's corrupt. Couple years ago she smashed her car while drunk as a skink but somehow got off any charges...I know I know, it's Hazel she's loved she shouldn't have to face any punishment.
Good on you Carolyn, the whistle blowers are always demonised...keep up the heat up on Hazel's fiefdom...change is needed.

I was pleased to see that you are already pursuing a new career Carolyn. However, I must tell you that attacking someone else in order to defend your own position is why you have failed politically. You may not want to take that baggage with you into your new career in journalism. Also, before you consider journalism, buy a good dictionary. Look up democracy. You have no idea what the word means. My proof? You were responsible for the changes to Question Period. A practice that for 30 years gave citizen's a voice at Council meetings. I am not from Mississauga, used to be, but I believe Missy has been very well served by the Hurricane for decades - a fact few would deny. Parrish seems to be making her political move as she smells an issue of vulnerability. She of the Left who hide behind appearance of due process in their quest for power. First of all I was at the meeting last Wednesday and I can assure you it was not packed by realtors and developers... I certainly am not... You are grasping as straws and your desperation is showing through.. I can also assure you I am not "blind" nor deaf and I saw first hand on Wednesday how cold, heartless and how manipulative you truly are the way you twisted thing around and brought irrelevant crap to the table... Debt free Mississauga is a blight on the Liberal record of spend (a little for the pocket ) send ( a little more for the pocket) and spend some more. Wow ! Is this a new career for Ms Parrish as newspaper columnist ? Let us see how many careers she has tried.
A) Her now-infamous attempt to become anti-jew crusador. I didn't see that going into any maturity.
B) The George W.Bush Doll-crusher. Remained as another unfulfulled attempt.
C) Trying to become Mississauga Mayor. Are you already giving up on that ?
D) Why then trying to become white-supremacist champion by dual-meaning mention of 'brown-box' neighbourhood. That will certainly be well understood by english-literate Mississauga residents irrespective of brown or white or black colour.
E) The newspaper columnist. Sadly, won't last if you only persue personal agenda here also, e.g., assigning back-door contract to own daughter.
